in defense of Carly

MIT's Technology Review magazine recently ran an article, "Carly's Way", about a former HP Labs researcher's rather negative opinions of Carly Fiorina's effect on the Labs. Now TR have taken it down without explanation.

When I read the article I was surprised on three fronts. First, that TR would run such a biased article. Second, many of the claims the researcher made were false. I've been in the Labs too, both pre-Carly and throughout her tenure. She never insisted that all research projects should have a three year business payoff; in fact she was a strong supporter of deep, long term work such as molecular-scale electronics. She worked to raise the public profile of the Labs, and stated publicly on several occasions that HP Labs was a "crown jewel for HP". In a climate of increasing global competition, poor macroeconomic conditions, and declining R&D spending, Carly consistently supported HP's investment in disruptive, long term technology development.

Third, I found it curious that the profile of this employee, Hungarian-born, long-time printing & imaging researcher "G.S." who left HP in 2003, did not match any individual that I or my colleagues recognized. Sure, it could have been disguised to protect the bitter. But the article just didn't hang together for me, and now it has been taken down. Go figure.
